GAUTENG FREEWAY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT: MILESTONE ACHIEVED
N1 John Vorster bridge widening
Temporary closing of the N1 at John Vorster Interchange on the weekend of 4to 6 February 2011
The N1 at the John Vorster Interchange will be reduced to two lanes per direction and closed for up to 20 minutes at a time, in sporadic intervals, during the weekend of 4 to 6 February 2011, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced today.
As part of SANRAL’s Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) two additional traffic lanes will be constructed on the existing John Vorster Bridge in Centurion, which means that the existing bridge over the N1 will be widened.
As part of the bridge widening, large prefabricated beams have to be placed between the newly constructed abutments and centre pier over the N1. Two beams will be placed over each carriageway of the freeway. A truck and trailer will transport the beams to the top of John Vorster bridge from where it will be placed into position utilising two cranes that will be positioned next to the bridge on the shoulders of the N1 freeway.
Weather permitting the work is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 5 February 2011. The beams over the southbound carriageway will be placed first and it is anticipated that the process will start around 5h30 on Saturday morning (5 February 2011). The southbound carriageway will be completely closed at the bridge for a period of approximately 20 minutes for the placement of the first beam. Following this, traffic will be allowed to go through, where after the carriageway will be closed for a further 20 minutes for the placement of the second beam.
As soon as the placement is completed over the southbound carriageway, the cranes will be moved to the northbound carriageway, and set up for the placement of the other two beams. It is anticipated that the placing of the first beam will start around 9h00 on Saturday morning (5 February 2011). The northbound carriageway will also be closed at the bridge for a period of approximately 20 minutes at a time to place these two beams. Before and after the placement of the beams short road closures of five minutes or less might also be required to position and set up the cranes.
One lane, in a southbound direction (towards Centurion golf estate), on John Vorster drive on the bridge over the N1 will also be closed off. The trucks with the beams will be parked in this lane from where it will be lifted in position.
Should bad weather or an unforeseen circumstance prevent the operation taking place on Saturday, 5 February 2011, the works will be rescheduled for Sunday, 6 February 2011.
Preparatory work will already start on Friday evening, 4 February 2011, from 21h00 onwards. The N1 both directions will be reduced to two lanes per direction for the duration of the works.
SANRAL urges road users to reduce speed and adhere to the road signs in the effected area.
SANRAL apologises in advance for any inconvenience that will be caused and thank road users for their understanding.
