NEW RIVONIA INTERCHANGE UPDATE

New northbound on-ramp will have separate access from Rivonia Road south (Sunninghill), Witkoppen Road East and West (Buccleuch and Fourways) as well as from Rivonia Road north.

The new Rivonia interchange will be opened on Sunday 14 March 2010.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced today that two new ramps of the Rivonia Interchange will be opened to the public this Sunday. The Interchange provides access to and from the N1 to Rivonia, Sandton and Sunninghill. The upgrading of the Interchange is part of SANRAL’s Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

The first phase of the interchange upgrade had been implemented and is currently open to traffic. The upgrading of the Interchange involves the opening of new ramps in a phased manner between mid March 2010 and April 2010.

SANRAL indicated that the new ramps are provided to ultimately eliminate right turn movements at ramp terminals. In order to allow construction access to the confined space at the Rivonia Interchange, it is necessary to phase the upgrading process and in some cases open temporary ramps.

On 14 March 2010, under an interim phase, the existing N1 North on-ramp will be closed and two new on-ramps will be opened. The closing of the on-ramp is required to provide space for construction of a new free-flow off-ramp onto Rivonia Road south. The details are indicated on the attached diagram and described below.

Closing of the Ramp
The existing northbound on-ramp providing access onto the N1 North (Pretoria), with its present terminal on Rivonia Road, will be closed.

Opening of New Ramps
Traffic from Sunninghill on Rivonia Road (south) wishing to access the N1 North (Pretoria), will be required to turn right from Rivonia Road onto Witkoppen Road (west) (Point C). The access to the N1 is located at the next signal controlled intersection, opposite the present intersection with Achter Road (Point A), where motorists will have to take the left slip lane and then onto the N1 North (towards Pretoria).

Traffic from Buccleuch on Witkoppen Road (west) wishing to access the N1 North (Pretoria) will be required to cross Rivonia Road (Point D) and also access the N1 North at the abovementioned slip lane (Point A).

Traffic from Fourways on Witkoppen Road (east) wishing to access the N1 North (Pretoria) will have to make a right turn at the intersection with Achter Road (Point B) at the signal controlled intersection and access the N1 North.

Traffic from Rivonia on Rivonia Road (north) wishing to access the N1 North (Pretoria) will enter a new on-ramp on the left hand side of Rivonia Road (Point E), immediately after the bridge carrying the N1 over Rivonia Road.

Motorists should note that each phased opening will change the layout and functioning of the Interchange, which will result in the substantial change to traffic patterns on Witkoppen- and Rivonia Roads. Motorists are requested to be patient during the construction operations and are advised to reduce speeds, observe road signs and exercise caution, while familiarising themselves with the changes.

Traffic signals will be adjusted to allow for the new traffic patterns. If required, traffic movements at the Intersections will initially be controlled by Point’s men, until the trafficflow stabilises.

SANRAL apologises in advance for any inconvenience which will be caused by the construction process.
