MEDIA RELEASE issued by SANRAL 17 March 2010 FINAL CONVERSION OF THE WILLIAM NICOL INTERCHANGE ON THE N1 TO A SINGLE POINT INTERCHANGE
The conversion of the William Nicol interchange on the N1 to operate as a single point system, will be finalised on the weekend of 19 to 22 March 2010, The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced today.
A single point interchange has a central traffic signal in the centre of the bridge that spans across the freeway. All traffic movements through the interchange are controlled at this traffic signal. The attached diagram schematically indicates the new layout of the interchange and how traffic movements will take place once the interchange is opened on 22 March 2010. Traffic movements will be considerably different from the existing arrangement at the William Nicol interchange once the single point system is in operation. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, reduce speeds and observe posted road signs.
In order to complete the conversion of the interchange it is necessary to close the interchange for a period of time to all public traffic. This closure is scheduled from 22h00 on Friday evening 19 March 2010 until Monday 22 March 2010. During this period no public traffic will have access from or to the N1 freeway via the interchange. It will also not be possible to cross the freeway via William Nicol Drive itself.carefully and apologise
Motorists will be required to use Rivonia Interchange or Malibongwe Interchange as alternatives for access to and from the N1 freeway. To cross the N1 freeway, from Sandton to Fourways or visa versa, motorists can detour via Main Road or Grosvenor/Douglas Road. Detour Routes are shown on the attached street map and will also be signposted at strategic points along the routes. Although William Nicol Drive will only be closed at Leslie and Sloane streets on the northern and southern sides of the N1, respectively, motorists are advised to divert at Witkoppen road and Grosvenor road or Main road (at crossings) respectively in order to alleviate congestion at the closures itself.
SANRAL apologises in advance for any inconvenience that will be caused by this conversion and closure. The full closure is deliberately scheduled on a long weekend to avoid affects on the major flow of traffic along the N1 and using William Nicol interchange during the normal working week. We thank all road users for their continued patience.
